Abadía Retuerta is a prestigious estate located in Sardón de Duero, Castilla y León, Spain. It was originally founded in 1146 as the Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta by the Premonstratensian Order. Ángel Anocíbar, the head winemaker, collaborates with the team to create both classic and experimental wine styles. Abadía Retuerta is not only known for its exceptional wines but also for its commitment to environmental and ethical standards.
Despite its sprawling scale, vineyards only cover 192 hectares of the estate’s best soils, split into 54 small plots (‘pagos’) along the banks of the Douro River. The majority is planted to Tempranillo, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and small amounts of Merlot and Petit Verdot. White varieties including Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo make a surprisingly age-worthy blend.
